Don't Order the Bat Wing
Everybody loves a Top 5. I don’t know why… well, yes I do. Everyone loves their OWN Top 5 because it makes them happy. It reminds them of five times they really enjoyed themselves, while mixing-in the competitive part of human nature – I must rank you, top five things, because surely one of you must be better than the other – then applying a certain level of importance to what is essentially a pretty fickle opinion.
Having said that, I do love a good Top 5. Like Rob Gordon (John Cusack) in High Fidelity, I’m constantly thinking about them. Rob only ranked songs.
I rank everything.
It’s at worst an obsessive tick, and at best a charming quirk about me. Probably #3 in the Top 5 charming Brandon quirks – ranking just behind (#2) my passion for starting a restaurant chain called “Cheesesteaks and Cheesecakes” followed by “Falafels and Waffles” and (#1) my urge to say “carrots” during any conversational lull.
This isn’t my first Top 5 on this blog. I did a Top 5 iPhone Apps for my mom and dad’s radio show a few months ago. But I’m sure this will one in a long line of others!
So, without further ado, I present my Top 5:
Restaurant Appetizers
1. Bang Bang Shrimp – Bonefish Grille
Scientists have apparently spent millions of our tax dollars determining the perfect combination of unicorn blood, rainbow juice and miracle whip used to create the special Bang Bang sauce. It’s delicious and fun to say “Bang! Bang!” to the server, who will laugh in your presence, then walk to the kitchen and tell her other attractive waitress friends that you are a jackass as she spits on your shrimp.
2. House Smoked Salmon – Stonewood Grill and Tavern
Glazed with whole grain mustard and dill, served with chive aioli and crusty baguette slices
Yeah, I know. Smoked Salmon.. But seriously, the cool fish mixed with the glaze topping is ridiculous. I would bathe in the glaze if I didn’t think Steph would find me disgusting and insane afterward.
3. Wood Grilled Szechwan Spiced Baby Back Pork Ribs – Roy’s
Meat falls off the bone (oh, grow up), and the Szechwan spice gives it an Asian flavor that is actually making me cry. Literally, right now, I’m crying joyous tears.
4. Bruschetta – Stonewood Grill and Tavern
Fresh grilled garlic bread, topped with diced vine-ripe tomatoes, basil, infused olive oil and aged parmesan cheese, served with our balsamic vinaigrette dressing
Second best Stonewood app is still a great choice.
5. Mexico City Spinach Con Queso – J. Alexander’s
And the salsa ain’t bad either..
Honorable Mention
Artichoke and Spinach Dip – Copeland’s
Creamy artichoke and spinach dip topped with Monterey Jack and served with fried bow tie pasta.
