Frivolous Scoring

Five-star: 4/5

The Basics:
The best aliens-come-to-earth movie in recent memory. The plot — yes, there’s plot! — is outstanding. The characters, human and alien, are real and beg for your sympathies… which you WILL give them. And even the most CGIish stuff feels so possible, that you almost forget its CGI at times.

Favorite “OHH!” moment(s): I love watching big, techy alien guns blow people into bits. And there’s plenty of that. Cool, lightning firing, air compression blasting, badass alien guns. And plenty of human baddies turning into flying raw burger particles. If you like this too, prepare to be entertained.

Whispering Oscar hubub: I hope this wins an Oscar, any way possible. Oscar winners rarely entertain. They’re either plodding, one time watchers, adapted musicals, or something starring Meryl Streep. But this entertains and has Oscar legs.

Who’s good: The hero Wikus Van De Merwe (Sharlto Copley) is both lovable and pitiful in large amounts. The digital effects team responsible for making aliens “Christopher” and Chris’s son. Can a CGI character win best supporting actor? And Chris’s son is cute and has some great lines.

Fox Watch: Wikus’ wife, played by Vanessa Haywood, provides some mandatory hotness. Albeit in only a couple scenes.
